How to be qualified for an international academic conference

This photo was taken during the second day of the conference held at Murdoch University.

When I was taking up my masters in the University of the Philippines Diliman, I used to hear my classmates discuss about their upcoming conference presentations outside the Philippines. I kept wondering how to be able to attend such conferences just like them. Fast forward two years after, God allowed me to embark a journey in participating my first ever international conference outside my home country.

So how did it become possible for me?

Be prepared long before an opportunity strikes.

This might be a common advise you keep on hearing. But in reality, it takes a lot of preparation beforehand to be ready for an opportunity. For me, it took me to finish my masters to come up with a thesis worth sharing to the world. So when my adviser told me to submit a paper during a call for papers in the International Conference on Power and Energy Systems (ICPES) 2019, I was able to take on the challenge.

Grab the opportunity when it comes your way.

When my adviser told me about submitting a paper, I actually doubted if my paper would make it. After all, my paper will be pitting against other papers around the globe. But whenever given an opportunity, you must decide to take the challenge and do your best. So despite my personal doubts, I began to calendar all the deadlines and started working on for the paper submission. You will never know what could be unless you had the courage to try.

Follow instructions carefully.

Writing a paper for conference proceedings requires you to peruse and follow the given instructions. If they indicated a specific format for the headings, tables, figures, and citation, then you must do so accordingly.

Seek fresh eyes.

When you’ve been working for the same write-up for quite some time, you may need fresh eyes to spot some typographical errors or parts that need improvement. What I meant with fresh eyes is to have somebody else to look into your work and comment on it. Having this kind of feedback allows you to improve your work efficiently.

Commit yourself in working within deadlines.

The thing about submissions is that they always come with deadlines. So if you are really determined to gain a spot in the conference, you must be able to submit your paper on or before the indicated paper submissions deadline. Be sure to calendar it because if you don’t calendar it, you won’t do it.

Submit everything to God in prayer.

After doing your part of hard work on the things you can control (such as writing the paper), it’s time to let God work on the things you cannot control (such as what will happen after submitting your paper).

Before you do anything, put your trust totally in God and not in yourself. Then every plan you make will succeed.
Proverbs 16:3 TPT

And know that when you pray according to God’s will, it will be given to you.

Since we have this confidence, we can also have great boldness before him, for if we ask anything agreeable to his will, he will hear us.
1 John 5:14 TPT
